Hexane Free Castor Oil
Hexane free castor oil has been extracted without hexane, a petroleum-derived solvent that some producers use to pull more oil out of the seed.
What hexane is
Hexane is a solvent made from crude oil. In large-scale oil production, crushed seeds can be washed in hexane, which dissolves the oil out of the seed. The hexane is then evaporated off. It is cheap and efficient, which is why it is common in commodity oils.
Why choose hexane free castor oil
Many people simply prefer an oil that never came into contact with a petroleum solvent, especially one they put on skin and hair. Cold pressing gets the oil out mechanically instead, at a lower yield and a higher price.
How to check a label
- "Hexane free" or "solvent free" stated on the bottle
- "Cold pressed" or "expeller pressed"
- Certified organic products may not use synthetic solvents such as hexane in extraction
